I find that pound does an excellent job at load balancing. It has some issues with redirects though.

I tried using apache in reverse proxy mode and although it would load balance under heavy traffic conditions it would serve up corrupted HTML code.

Are you trying to load balance between systems in the same datacenter or load balance across data centers?
