It would be great if some big name tv tuner board manufacturers offered drivers for freebsd. Even if they didn't officially support them, making them available would drastically increase sales of their hardware!

To the contrary, most seem to hide what chipset they use.

I am already facing the same problem in Linux. There are drivers available but it is difficult to install them because you have to know the correct model no. and you have to be somewhat and advanced level user to do so. I hoped that in FreeBSD it should be no problem. I believe the TV Card manufacturers should provide solutions of all the OS available in the market.
